In 1989, Ronald Reagan was President, gas cost $0.90 a gallon and Rodney Belanger had just begun working at Maine Veterans’ Homes.

Belanger has served veterans like himself as a CNA, resident transportation driver and medical supply staff person for the past 30 years.

“I must hate it here, right?” he joked.

What’s kept him here for so long?

“We are reliable, we're honest, we're team players, we respect our vets and we lead the way to excellence in caring,” said Belanger.

Besides keeping residents supplied with personal care items, Belanger also transports them to and from campus to medical appointments.

He said his favorite part of the job as an Army veteran himself is being able to serve fellow vets.

“It makes me feel great that I'm doing my part in rewarding them and myself at the same time for what they did for us...in understanding what they did and why they did it in serving our country and being able to bring freedom to all Americans,” he said.

Easing Communication for MVH Residents

Belanger said he feels a connection to many residents, which helps them open up to him.

“If they know that you're a vet also, they'll communicate with me a little more openly, so I can get to understand them a little bit better,” he said.

He added, “A lot of times, we don't talk about what went on; we just keep quiet, keep it within ourselves, so it makes it a little nicer when I'm able to get something out of the residents that maybe somebody else can't.”

Thank you for your service to our country and to Maine Veterans’ Homes, Rodney!

Veterans Serving Veterans at MVH

At Maine Veterans’ Homes, we are a nonprofit, independent organization that’s separate from the VA. We were founded on the belief that it is both a duty and an honor to serve those who have served our country.

Many staff members, like Rodney Belanger above, are also veterans, so they have insight into residents’ lives in a way that civilians might not. And our board of trustees is also comprised entirely of veterans like you, so we always make decisions with veterans’ unique needs in mind.
