Throughout the holidays and during the Christmas season, we at Maine Veterans’ Homes are honored and honestly humbled by the outpouring of support that we receive from our community partners throughout the great state of Maine.
One frequent comment that we hear this time of year is “I want to help, but I just don’t know how.” It’s a great question, and one with a lot of great answers.
While the Christmas season – and the holidays in general – are often presented as a joyous time filled with family, friends and fond memories, it is important to remember those veterans and families for whom the holidays are a challenging time.
Many of the veterans we serve will not have a family to be with during the holiday season, but there are a lot of ways you can help make the holidays joyful for those veterans who served, honored and protected us.
How to Support Veterans at Maine Veterans’ Homes
Here are some of the many ways that you can support veterans at Maine Veterans’ Homes this holiday season.
1. Donate – Maine Veterans’ Homes is an independent, nonprofit organization serving Maine’s veterans and families. That means that we are independent of the Veterans Administration (VA) and independent of the federal and state governments. As a registered 501(c)3 charitable organization, your gifts to Maine Veterans’ Homes this holiday season may be tax deductible (gifts to registered 501(c)3 charitable organizations may be tax deductible based on your income level, total charitable contributions, and other factors. Consult your tax adviser or the IRS for more information about charitable giving).
2. Volunteer – Each of our six homes (Augusta, Bangor, Caribou, Machias, Scarborough and South Paris) have active volunteer groups that spend time in our homes throughout the year assisting with arts and crafts, visiting, reading, helping with music and events, appointment driving, gardening, delivering mail and many other rewarding activities.
3. Christmas/Holiday cards – Many of our residents will spend this holiday season away from friends and family. Sending a Christmas or holiday card to a veteran will help them know that they are not forgotten and that you appreciate their service and sacrifice.Social Media – At Maine Veterans’ Homes, our activities staff does a fantastic job of keeping our veterans connected to their communities. One of the ways you can support MVH this holiday season is to “like” and “follow” MVH on social media. Every day you will see great stories about our veterans, and follow them as they continue their adventures around the great state of Maine.
