Some people spend years figuring out what they want to do for a living. Lacey Kalloch, a certified nursing assistant and certified residential medication aide at Maine Veterans’ Homes - Machias, found her passion for nursing as a senior in high school.
When her school began offering a free CNA class for any interested students, Kalloch signed up. Her CNA clinicals were largely held at MVH - Machias, and she felt a connection with the mission and the people from the beginning.
“I really love working with the residents,” she said. “It's become a pretty big passion to work with veterans, and just being able to be someone that they can look to if they need help.”
By the time she graduated high school, Kalloch had received her CRMA certification and knew she wanted to be back at MVH - Machias as a CNA/CRMA.
Kalloch added, “Honestly, I'm honored (to work with vets) - a lot of times to hear their stories and to know that I can give back when they gave something to me is really great.”
MVH Promotes Camaraderie Among Residents and Staff
Besides working with the residents, Kalloch said she enjoys the close-knit feeling among MVH - Machias’ employees.
“I really love a lot of my coworkers; they're great, and we make a good team,” she said.
She also said the supportive atmosphere was one of her favorite parts of the job.
“It’s really special when people - residents or coworkers - express that I do help them, that I am a good part of the team and that I'm someone to look to in times of help,” she said. “No matter who it comes from, I think that's one of the best experiences.”
Machias’ small size and that close-knit community make it stand apart from other long-term care communities, Kalloch said.
“There aren’t a lot of places out there like us,” she said.
Why Maine Veterans’ Homes is Different
Since 1983, Maine Veterans’ Homes - an independent, nonprofit organization that’s separate from the VA - has provided long term care, rehabilitation and more to Maine’s veterans and their families.
We believe caring for those who have served us is not just a duty - it is a privilege.
We have created a standard of care that goes beyond satisfying physical needs to one that embraces a person’s entire self and helps them thrive. And we understand our veterans’ unique perspectives because our leadership team and many of our staff members are veterans themselves.
