Residents and employees at Maine Veterans’ Homes in Machias enjoyed a large variety of activities and outings during National Assisted Living Week in September. The theme this year was “Keeping Connected.”
“As we looked for ways to be connected with the community, we asked residents for their input. They wanted to go out to eat and there were various places on their bucket list," said MVH Machias Activities Coordinator Jen Wood. "The group narrowed it down to Vazquez Mexican Restaurant in Milbridge and The Schnitzel Wagon in Machias, as they knew these places would be closing in the fall."
The week started off with a Grandparents’ Day Tea where residents, families, staff and volunteers enjoyed tasty treats made during their cooking club. Other highlights of the week were hand massages with essential oils, Bingo with the Machias Cub Scout Troop 125, a campfire with roasted marshmallows and sing along, homemade pizza party with staff and residents, and special music with Alan Cook and Barry Gilpatrick.
The annual American Legion Auxiliary Post 9 Bingo tournament helped top off the fun with residents from Marshall Healthcare and Davis Estates joining the MVH folks. This year the winners of the tournament was Davis Estates.
A huge thank you to all the staff, volunteers, residents, and family members that helped make this year's National Assisted Living Week such a success.
