MVH South Paris Veteran of the Month: Shirley Maass

South-Paris-VOM-Shirley-Maas-2.jpgShirley Maass was born on July 28, 1923 in Athens, New York. She graduated from Catskill High School and then attended nursing school at Hudson City Hospital. She received her diploma as a Registered Nurse.

Shirley enlisted in the Navy in March 1945 and served at the Navy Hospital in St. Albans, Long Island, New York, during World War II. She did clinical nursing where she took care of the wounded and ill soldiers. She was honorably discharged on November 7, 1945.

Shirley was married for 67 years to a Marine she had met during her time of service. They have 4 children, 15 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

After military service, Shirley worked as a labor/delivery nurse and nurse supervisor. She enjoyed her career as a Registered Nurse for many years before retiring to do some traveling.

Shirley enjoys painting, swimming, reading, puzzles, walking & music.

Shirley came to the Maine Veterans' Home in South Paris in 2014 and enjoys listening to the music and visiting around the home. Shirley resides on the C Unit.
